Leo at
the Berlin Wall
July & August 1985

After reading a special in
the Dutch magazine De Tijd
of 31 May 1985

I went for a holiday in
Berlin for the first time.

I went together with
friend and photographer
Jørgen Snoep.

He also made
most of the pictures.

I sent the above photo as a holiday card to all my friends.
Jørgen sent the one on which we walked the other way.

You can see us walking on the
Straße des 17. Juni in West-Berlin

It was also the first time I met Carmen Arndt
(you can see her smoking at the table).

I met Carmen on 26 July 1985 when Jørgen and I
went to the discotheque Alextreff near Alexanderplatz
at the feet of the Fernsehturm in East-Berlin.

We still are friends.
I went back to Berlin in 1986, 1990, 1991, 1993 and
- as you can see on my holiday pictures - in 2001.

In the same magazine I read an article
about the famous Dutch writer
Jules Deelder.

The first real interview I ever did
was with him, only a few months earlier.

In the article he wrote about something he sprayed on the Berlin Wall.
He was angry because someone sprayed over his sentence.

Jørgen™ and I decided to restaurate his expression.
