Leo at farmer's protest - 's-Gravendeel - Holland - 26 March 2001

In March 2001 the Foot and Mouth Disease broke out in Holland.
Some people think it is better to kill
all the animals in the surrounding and they made that as a law.

However, there is a medicin against it...
But, for some economic reasons, the farmers may not use it...

Most farmers do not like that rule and they protest lots of times.
One of the first protests was making a little fire at all the farms.
So you could see little fires all over Holland at the same moment
round 21.30 at Monday 26 March 2001.

One of them in our region was the young farmer Bas Herweijer
(the big one in the red overall) in
's Gravendeel.
He almost has 40 cows and he does not want them to be killed.

In some areas in Holland there still are some regions
with strong regulations for the transport of cattle.

I interviewed Herweijer and made a report
about this regional news on
Radio Rijnmond.
