Leo at a protest - Papendrecht - Holland - 27 January 2000
The municipality of Papendrecht (the city where I live)
on Wednesday 19 January 2000 announced that it wants to
build a centre for 350 refugees from all over the world
in the new district Oostpolder in Papendrecht.
A lot of
people of Oostpolder do not like that
and collected 328 signatures.
On Thursday evening 27 January 2000
they presented the signatures with a petition to
mayor Elisabeth Tuijnman and the city council of Papendrecht.
The 'neighbours' are afraid that with the planned centre
the value of their new houses will decrease and
the criminality in their neighbourhood will increase.
On 28 June 2001 the city council decided the
centre can come.
It will be opened before Summer 2002.
I
recorded it and interviewed them on Radio Rijnmond
and it seemed they are not realy contra refugees,
but only have some difficult questions for the city council.
