Leo at dolphin mystery - Dordrecht - Holland - 21 February 2000

Leo at dolphin in garbage - Dordrecht - 21 February 2000

People of the greenservice of Dordrecht found a very young dolphin
on Monday 21 February 2000 round 10.00 AM
in a garbage container in the Maasstraat in Dordrecht.

The Police ZHZ questioned a lot of people in the neighbourhood,
and some people told that a man throwed the animal
from his car in the container.

It was a big mystery where the 95 cm dolphin came from.

A few days later a 30 years old man from Dordrecht called the police
and told them he found the dolphin the day before on the North Sea beach near Oostvoorne.
He thought taking it was fun but later he did not know what to do with it.
So he throwed the dolphin in the garbage container.

With that he broke 2 laws:
keeping protected species of animals (2 years prison)
and illegal dumping of (animal) waste.

Almost 1 year later the man had to come to the Dordrecht Court of Justice.
On Monday 12 March 2001 judge Smid convicted him
guilty without punishment, because
the animal was already dead when he found it.
'This could happen to everybody', the judge stated.

I made a live report about this national news on Radio Rijnmond
and made a follow-up on 12 March 2001.
