Leo at fireworks disaster - Enschede - 14 May 2000

At the company SE Fireworks in the Tollensstraat in Enschede on Saturday afternoon 13 May 2000
a fireworks storage with 180,000 kilograms of fireworks exploded after a fire broke out.

Till today almost 1,000 people were injured, over 400 houses were totally destroyed
and
22 people were killed. The damage was estimated on almost 30 million Euro.

The explosion was probably caused by the fact that the fireworks
were stored in simple sea containers.
Most people did not know there was a fireworks storage between their houses,
and the mayor and the city council said they did not know.

Till today investigations on this disaster still are going on.
You can see a reconstruction of the disaster on the site of
the Commission Investigation Fireworks Disaster.

I went together with photographer Etienne Busink to Enschede the day after,
stayed there for two days and made live reports
about this
world news on Radio Rijnmond.

The picture was made Sunday 14 May 2000 round 13.00 on the Roomweg
near the
Grolsch brewery in Enschede Holland.
